Below: The iconic Vues d’Amérique du Nord wallcovering, by Zuber , a part of Pierre Frey’s vast archive. I love opposites. Sweet and salty, light and dark, Felix and Oscar. It’s the tension, of course, that makes opposites work so well. In design, I gravitate to rooms filled with juxtaposition. How about some Scandinavian midcentury modern mixed with a smidge of Louis XIV? Or a rustic cabin aesthetic with sculptural, modern lighting? Delicious. As we put together this issue I realized that we have several projects that employ that tension. The team at Alter Interiors blended a client’s British aesthetic with a Spanish Revival home in San Francisco, striking the perfect balance. And Searl Lamaster Howe’s designers combined Paris eclecticism with midcentury modern in a vintage Chicago condo, for two clients who had never lived together before. Our cover story is about third-generation family-owned Maison Pierre Frey and its impactful influence on the decorative arts. In addition to the work the Frey family has done to preserve valuable and historic textile archives, they also understand the power of juxtaposition as they continue to innovate with designers all over the world. Their newest collection, Jardin á la Française, was shot at Château d’Aunoy and is inspired by classical French gardens. They paired this collection, in that setting, with the clean lines of modern furniture and accessories, with every image more beautiful than the next. In fact, the French fabric house is known for this type of juxtaposition, combining modern graphics with age-old techniques, a blend of contemporary and traditional that merges into something completely new. That is the best of design. Cheers to spring, and we will see you at THE MART!

Barry Dixon’s Lorrain mural wallpaper in greige from Fabricut creates immediate visual impact, while maintaining a neutral color palette. The slender bench with attached side table provides seating upon entry. ow does an interior designer know when to restore a space to maintain its original design intent or when to update it? The answer is simple: form follows function. If vintage design details work, keep them; when they don’t, modern updates make interiors functional for the 21st century. When Chicago-based architecture firm Searl Lamaster Howe (SLH) was tasked with redesigning a vintage condo in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, the design team considered what retro elements to preserve and what needed refreshing. The young homeowners, a recently married couple who had never lived together before, each brought a distinct aesthetic—midcentury modern for one, Parisian eclecticism for the other—and they wanted a cohesive home that reflected both. “The project was an exercise in blending, starting with modern updates to a vintage condo, melding two design styles, and sourcing from retail to custom pieces,” explains SLH interior designer Bethany Grachan. “The clients knew what they individually liked, but they leaned on us to figure out how exactly that would come together.” The solution was a residence as relaxed as it is refined. “We proposed enhancements through lighting and fixtures to brighten the space, as well as through furniture and layouts to H provide a home that was more functional to them,” Grachan adds. Maximizing light became a primary goal, as tan walls and outdated fixtures left the condo feeling dim. Designers painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s bright white Chantilly Lace and stained the hardwood floors in a warm, even tone to enhance the vertical surfaces. Updated lighting was selected to reflect off the white walls and distribute illumination throughout the condo. “We had a vivid vision of how the space could look as you entered through the front door. Starting in the foyer specifically, the pastoral scene mural wallcovering set the tone for a strong first impression without being cluttered or overdone,” Grachan says of Barry Dixon’s Lorrain wallcovering. “Reapplying the foyer’s existing, well-detailed millwork trim in a fresh cotton white paint over the lightly toned wallcovering allowed us to honor and complement the building’s vintage past. The overall subtle foyer color palette was meant to contrast with the rooms beyond, providing a nice balance.” A neutral palette and restrained materials draw the eye inward to the Ward Bennett Scissor chair reupholstered in bright-red Knoll fabric just beyond the foyer. “We aimed for the right mix of vintage and old-meets-modern and new, and let jewel tones mingle with light and bright hues,” Grachan says. “Unexpected and grounding accent pieces from shops like Jayson Home and Anthropologie,

The foyer serves homeowners and guests alike—providing storage while maintaining a strong first impression. “With the updated palette and lighting, furniture—such as the slender-legged bench with an incorporated side table—allows users a space to put on and take off shoes... the simple design serves as a space to collect dropped items.” The team also rethought traditional room roles. Though the condo had a large dining room, the clients didn’t need dining to dominate the space. “They wanted a space that felt quaint when it was just the two of them but also offered the ability to comfortably host a few friends and family,” Grachan explains. Designers custom-made an eclectic banquette and paired it with a classic elliptical Saarinen table in warm rosewood, creating “this amazing balance of comfortable and casual meets unmatched and refined,” Grachan notes. “As this took up only a portion of the large room, we were able to incorporate an additional smaller seating arrangement that is perfect for reading or intimate gatherings.” The kitchen offers another illustration of thoughtful planning, as designers reconfigured the island into a peninsula to create a Parisian café-like eating counter. In the end, the condo doesn’t read as vintage revived or modern imposed—it simply functions with quiet precision. W R I T T E N B Y K E L S E Y M U LV E Y P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y S U Z A N N A S C O T T AFFAIRS Global n the world of interior design, opposites don’t just attract. Juxtaposing elements can spark inspiration and lay the groundwork for truly personalized design palette. Such was the case for Jenny Magdol and Steffie Oehm of ALTER Interiors, a San Francisco–based firm that was tapped to put the finishing touches on a family home near the city’s Buena Vista Park. After spending a few years in London, the firm’s clients returned to the Bay Area and wanted to create living spaces that felt authentic to their experiences: something that was rife with British inspiration but didn’t feel out of place against the home’s Spanish Revival architecture. “They wanted to consider the architecture, which was also a requirement for us,” Oehm shares. “We wouldn’t do something that doesn’t talk to the architecture at all.” Magdol and Oehm employed a thoughtful use of pattern, texture, and vintage details to blend two cultures under one roof. Step inside the foyer of the 2,619-square-foot residence and you’ll spot a rare 1940s Arturo Pani wingback lounge chair, which has curved details that echo the house’s softly sculptured plaster arches. A whimsical light fixture above plays up the stairwell’s wrought-iron railings, while an antique Spanish pine wood dresser blends and function. “There was no place to put a closet, so we came up with was this beautiful dresser,” Magdol explains. “Each family member has their own drawer, and that’s where their shoes are stored.” Antiques and soft silhouettes play up the space’s architecture, but the design duo took a more calculated I For this San Francisco project, Jenny Magdol and Steffie Oehm of ALTER Interiors bring a British charm to this Spanish Revival residence. This mint green kitchen is equipped with Gaggenau appliances and a custom breakfast nook for well- appointed practicality.
designchicagomag.com designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 47 46 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART approach to its English elements. Magdol and Oehm traded in an onslaught of pattern and color—which feel inherently British, but incongruous in San Francsico—for hints of blue and green to evoke a “Northern California vibe.” “I think the kitchen color is British to me,” Oehm says of the minty cabinets and breakfast nook that interspace the room’s Gaggenau appliances. The designers reprise a similar palette in the home’s joint living and dining area: Here, chairs covered in muted fabrics from Holland & Sherry and Harlequin contrast with a Nickey Kehoe sofa upholstered in a sky-blue velvet from George Spencer Designs. However, Magdol and Oehm also use this common area to introduce thoughtful florals. “We weren’t going to have this maximalist space,” Oehm says. “Covering an entire room in a floral wasn’t really an option for them, but we did it strategically on more modern pieces.” The design duo coated a freestanding ottoman and multipurpose reading nook in botanical repeats, courtesy of S. Harris from Fabricut. Meanwhile, branchy artwork hangs above the sofa to enhance the subtle floral motif. “There’s this dance with colors and patterns,” Oehm explains. “You must make it feel like it belongs together when it really doesn’t. designchicagomag.com designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 53 52 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART enovations are often standard fare, but modernizing a home with traditional bones takes on a new layer of complexity when it involves a client committed to sustainability. Jessica Blue, whose namesake interiors firm has a focus on conscious design, proved to be the perfect choice to bridge the gap. “The family transitioned from a modern condo to a traditional Lincoln Park home, and while they wanted a contemporary feel, she [the wife] didn’t want to rip everything out from an environmentally considered perspective. So the goal was to mindfully bridge the two styles into one cohesive, balanced, bright, and neutral-forward refuge,” says Blue. To temper the home’s formality while preserving its historic charm, Blue and her team updated the home’s existing wall detailing—articulated by horizontal indentations and a more buttoned-up look—with fresh paint that brought it into the present. The trim and ceiling were painted an enticing dark green that adds depth. They were looking for an older home with character, so finding a Victorian here was a stroke of luck; they rarely come on the market. Jay studied art history in college and took a course called Materials and Methods that she still thinks about. After his service in World War I, he worked for Burger, a dealer of upholstery fabric, and in 1933 went to work managing sales for Lauer, a company later acquired by Patrick Frey. At Lauer, he met his first partner, the designer Jean Chatanay, and the two would form Chatanay & Frey. From late nights stapling fabric samples together at home, to delivering orders on his bicycle, a passion for textiles and decorative arts grew.
