A utumn is fully upon us here in New York. The days are growing shorter, and there is a chill in the air in the evenings. Time for chunky sweaters, leaf-peeping weekends in the country, and the inevitable pumpkin patches and apple orchards. It’s my favorite time of year. I got married in autumn, and we spent many blissful October vacations in Maine, where the maples were decked out in brilliant orange and red, and the smell of pine hinted at Christmastime just around the corner. As it happens, the autumn palette is also my favorite. I was lucky enough to work for Louis Oliver Gropp during his House Beautiful years, and he once said, “Deb, don’t forget, orange is a neutral!” He was right, of course, and I never forgot it. We shared a love of orange. The colors of fall frequently appear in midcentury design, another favorite of mine, and among all the wonderful projects appearing in this issue is the midcentury classic Glass Ridge house by architect Ray Kappe. It is now the home of Amanda Gunawan and Joel Wong of OWIU Design, and they have done a stellar job of revitalizing this architectural gem. At the opposite end of the spectrum, a vivid color palette enlivens a listed farmhouse in Surrey, England, belonging to designer Ana Engelhorn. The covetable red dining room graces our cover. Who would not want to sit down to a meal in that gorgeous room? We are also celebrating the 60th anniversary of B&B Italia, a company born in the 1960s, instrumental in ushering midcentury design into the modern age. Known for their iconic designs and equally iconic graphics and branding, the Italian company brings international style home. As always, we are delighted to bring you pages of beautiful rooms, diverse styles, and innovative designs. And here is to a crisp, colorful fall season, with inspiration around every corner. Cheers!
