MARTIN Editor in Chief Opposite: Turf’s Cushion acoustic wall panels explore the interplay between light, form, and sound, and come in vivid colors. Top: The Art Deco facade of Showhouse at THE MART, designed by En Masse Architecture & Design. Above: Celeste Robbins designed a special alcove for the piano in this modern home with spectacular views of Lake Michigan. E very now and then, when I put a magazine together, a pattern emerges. You could call it a trend I guess, but I don’t really think in trends because designers don’t think in trends. They come and go and with some notable exceptions, they are mostly forgotten when the next big thing appears. But patterns are different. Maybe it’s the universe telling us what we need, or maybe it’s all just a big coincidence. When I started pulling together submissions and projects for this issue, I suddenly realized that almost everything I was looking at had some kind of musical element: a piano, a guitar, a DJ booth, a listening room. So, I assumed that the universe was telling me something and who am I to argue? I come from a musical family, my sister played the violin, and I played the piano and I don’t remember a time when there wasn’t some form of music playing in our house. I formed a new musical family when I married my husband, a bass guitarist with a heavy metal band who was, like me, obsessed with music of all kinds. I wish I had continued to play the piano so I could sit in one of the rooms in this issue and tickle the ivories, but nowadays I am content to appreciate those who share their very souls through sound. This issue is filled with great design from cover to cover, including the Showhouse at THE MART, which you can visit through the fall. And yes, it also includes a piano, a chartreuse one no less, which appears on our cover in the parlor room designed by KSA Design Group. So many talented and creative people contributed to this project, which had to be created from the ground up, in a space that was not a house. The talented team at En Masse Architecture and Design, led by Lucas Goldbach, designed the layout, coordinated with the designers and THE MART team, and created a home within the confines of a commercial building, complete with an Art Deco facade. No small feat. And this is why we love our design world so much. We get to interact with skill, expertise, creativity, and passion every single day. And we are thrilled to share it all with you, in the pages of our Fall issue. n

18 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com Place Gathering W R I T T E N B Y C H A R L O T T E VA L E TRENDS COME AND GO, BUT THE KITCHEN REMAINS THE MOST IMPORTANT ROOM IN THE HOUSE. A late-night scroll through real estate listings led designer Deborah Silver- Fagel, of Manor House Interior Design, to a 1920s Evanston home she couldn’t shake. Seeing a moody photo of a willow tree, an in-ground pool, and interiors that hadn’t been touched since the 1990s, she knew it was the place for her. The original kitchen had a postage-stamp- size layout with no eat-in area, so she worked with architect Melisa Cameron to create a space flooded with natural light. Soapstone, marble surfaces, and custom oak cabinetry give the kitchen an “its always been there” feel. Fabric by Zak + Fox, through Holly Hunt, covers the mixed-style chairs, and an antique door from France adds historical patina. 22 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com When the team at Two Hands Interiors—principal and owner Rachel Alcorn and interior designer Bryn Wulf—took on the design of this expansive row house in Naperville, Illinois, they knew it needed a complete kitchen redo. Their client wanted a home that epitomized the good life, and he had already picked out appliances from Sub-Zero, Wolf & Cove. So that the kitchen would not look like an appliance showroom, they created a hidden scullery area located behind the main kitchen cabinetry. The sophisticated design created a space perfect for entertaining, with an expansive island flanked by stools from Baker Furniture. 28 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com Postcard is a modern cafe and lounge in Chicago’s West Loop, where music defines the experience. Conceived with travel brand Monos, the space unfolds around sound: Ste Marie shaped monolithic timber panels, buttery leather, and sheer drapery into an atmospheric space that is balanced between openness and enclosure. Part listening room, part cafe, Postcard incorporates analog elements such as records, vintage monitors, and projected archival imagery, all contributing to the sensory experience. Bar stools by Pedrali. Designer Chad Dorsey created this music area just off the dining room of a client’s home in Dallas, Texas. “We tucked it in front of the memoir wall—curated with the homeowner’s prized possessions and featuring artwork centered on human rights and equality,” says Dorsey. “This family built their home around gathering people, whether it’s a dinner party or a fundraiser for a cause they care about, so it mattered to me that the space gave people a reason to get up from the table and keep the evening going.” Benjamin Moore’s Vanilla Milkshake adorns the walls, with Pale Oak on the baseboards. photography by cody ulrich

30 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com The team at Christie Hines Designs transformed a formerly little-used sitting room into a music room to give the homeowner a fresh space to play and entertain. The talented family of musicians, including several guitarists, singers, pianists, and a drummer, needed a space for musical interludes, and to house their over 18 guitars, many passed down from one generation to the next. 36 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com On the Gold Coast of Chicago, Julie Mitchiner of JAM Designs reimagined a 100-year-old historic home for longtime clients, preserving its architectural character and timeless grandeur while infusing the interiors with a fresh, personal perspective. The update included this classic marble-clad bath that is perfect for a deep soak or a quick shower. Fixtures from Brizo. photography by dustin halleck The team at Heartland Interior Design created this Lincoln, Nebraska, home with elements that evoke old- world, European design with a decidedly Midwestern feel, using locally sourced materials like reclaimed timber beams. In the primary bathroom, relaxation and durability guided the design. Zellige tiles cover the wall behind the freestanding tub, and recessed niches allow plants to drape from within. Though the homeowner admired the look of marble, maintenance concerns led to the use of gauged porcelain tile slabs with a marble look printed into them, mitered so that no seams are visible. The vanity was designed at two heights, with a stepped-down center section for hair and makeup. Roman Shades by The Shade Store.

38 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com ince opening its doors in 1930, THE MART has represented the convergence of culture, commerce, and, of course, great design. Now, the design hub is welcoming a new era with the Showhouse at THE MART, an immersive experience for both industry insiders and the public to enjoy. Located on the first floor, the 3,000-square-foot space has been reimagined into a multiroom penthouse, which designers have transformed into well-appointed environments. The Art Deco AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE SHOWHOUSE AT THE MART. Margaret Crow, THE MART’s managing director of marketing says, “The Showhouse invites visitors to imagine how the thousands of brands, colors, and styles available in our showrooms can merge to build a harmonious narrative and make a space feel like home.” n

designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 39 THE LIVING ROOM Designed by Abrams Valenti, the living room gives a subtle nod to the Art Deco design that punctuates the Windy City. Architectural elements like a curved wall and a layout designed for “conversation and movement” creates somewhere you can kick back, unwinde, and stay awhile. “We want guests to slow down and relax as they move into and through the space, and hopefully find themselves wanting to come back,” says Gina Valenti, interiors principal and partner of the Chicago-based firm. A palette of pinks, creams, blushes, and browns echoes the palette of the stone-and-bronze cocktail table, while textures from Fabricut, Maharam, and Phillip Jeffries lend an inviting atmosphere.

40 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com THE KITCHEN AND HALLWAY According to designer SuzAnn Kletzien, the hallway and kitchen’s color palettes were informed by the cabinetry from Scavolini. Here, Kletzien brings on the boldness by juxtaposing the orange accents with lapis walls, courtesy of Benjamin Moore. While organic lines and reeded panels lend a masculine touch, the whimsical Trellis in Windflower wallcovering by Innovations imbues a dainty femininity. “[It] evokes a sense of moody mixed with playful,” she says. Plumbing from Brizo and floors by Divine Flooring round out the room in style.

designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 41 THE POWDER ROOM To create the perfect powder room, K. Tyler and Renata Buenrostro of Morgante Wilson Architects let the room’s bones inform the overall design. “The original footprint was an L-shape that we carved into bold, symmetrical forms and layered with refined materials and rich color, hoping to deliver a deeply immersive and sensory experience,” Tyler explains. Materials like a marble Caplet pedestal sink from Ann Sacks and a Phillip Jeffries wallcovering add depth to the small space, while Waterworks plumbing and a billowy Pure Edge fixture from Lightology make even the more practical elements pretty. THE STUDIOLO Lovingly referred to as the Studiolo—a special room that, in the 15th century, was used for study, contemplation, and the occasional glass of wine—Gil Melott upgraded this time-honored room with the 21st century in mind. “I interpreted it for the Showhouse as a quiet place for the modern-day Luddite,” the Chicago designer explains. Melott eschews the speakers, outlets, and a screen present in most smart homes for a more primitive setup. From the woven Stark Carpet over a warm base from Divine Flooring to the mix of textiles from Pierre Frey and Holland & Sherry, the space has a collected, scholarly feel. The Studiolo’s pièce de résistance: A chalkboard wall covered in quotes from The Shining.

42 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com THE SCULLERY Designer Rebecca Goesling wanted to pay homage to the building’s past with the space she designed, but she also wanted to tap into the room’s practicality and functionality with touches from Artistic Tile, Brizo, and fabrics from Romo. “The 1920s embraced rapid growth in style, speed, synthetics, systems, and status,” she says. “Today, we ask if and how these innovations continue to benefit society. After a century of prioritizing efficiency, people pine for humanity.” THE BAR Designer Tuan Nguyen wanted to create a “mysterious and intimate” speakeasy that transported its guests to another place and time. Inspired by a wall mural, which blends Mondrian-esque geometrics with Greco-Roman motifs, the space is layered in rich walnut and soft mohair. As a proud AAPI designer, Nguyen knew it was important to bring his culture to the space: Marble tile from Ruchika Grover’s collection with Artistic Tile offers a sculptural statement, while a dramatic chandelier by Noz Nozawa for Corbett Lighting, through CAI Designs fills the room with a radiant glow.

designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 43 THE DINING ROOM While Art Deco design was deeply celebrated in the showhouse, Jessica Lagrange took a more eclectic approach in the dining room. “We wanted the room to feel timeless yet unexpected, sophisticated but still inviting,” the Chicago designer explains. “A space that feels collected, atmospheric, and ultimately very livable.” The goal, according to Lagrange, was to revamp the dining into “a more intimate, lounge-like” space. A Lee Jofa wallcovering served as the jumping-off point, while a terrazzo floor as well as pieces from Baker Furniture, Assembled Works, and rugs from Watson Smith lend character. THE TERRACE Cynthia Bolton-Smith of CCS Interior Design Group wanted to reimagine the terrace—or, as she calls it, “the garden salon at dusk”—into a setting that was “romantic and collected over time.” “I wanted the space to evoke the feeling of sipping wine in a European courtyard at sunset,” the Chicago designer shares. “Layered with texture, sculptural elements, soft lighting, and rich materials that invite guests to slow down and linger.” Brown Jordan’s outdoor furniture and touches from Poetry Tile and Thibaut bring the great outdoors to the Showhouse.

44 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com THE PRIMARY BATH Bathrooms might be recognized for their pragmatism, but this primary suite from Ilene Chase Design proves form and function can cleverly coexist. House of Rohl supplied many of the fixtures—including a vessel mount, faucet, and freestanding tub—crafting a classic convenience. Meanwhile, Holly Hunt delivered a fanciful botanical wallcovering as well as disc chandelier. THE PARLOR In this sunny parlor, which was expertly brought to life by KSA Design Group, a chartreuse piano strikes a chord. Stark Carpet rugs lay the foundation for a cozy escape, while layers of textural wallcoverings from Phillip Jeffries, artwork, and bursts of bright green form a convivial sensibility. A sectioned-off sitting area, which houses a Vladimir Kagan sofa from Holly Hunt, beckons guests inside. The Showhouse at THE MART is open through the Fall. Please email designchicago@themart.com to schedule a visit or event.

designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 45 THE FOYER According to Randy Heller, a designer in Highland Park, understanding the past was the key to creating a grand entrance for Showhouse at THE MART. “My team and I refreshed ourselves on the Art Deco movement before applying our own perspective to it,” she explains. “[We wanted to shape] a concept that reflects who we are as designers while honoring the spirit of the era.” A whimsical wallcovering, dramatic drapery, and dark flooring from Divine Flooring bridge the gap between old and new. THE PRIMARY BEDROOM James Dolenc, found inspiration for this primary bedroom in the glamorous sleeping carriages from the golden age of train travel. “Saturated in deep color and layered detail, the space reflects a renewed appreciation for Art Deco influences but interpreted in a more personal and livable way,” says the Chicago-based designer. The canopy, covered in Pierre Frey textiles, and a bench from Holly Hunt at the foot of the bed, yield an impactful intimacy: A place that’s simultaneously striking and serene. An antique console and desk paired with a chair from Anees Furniture and Design provide practicality, making this bedroom somewhere to enjoy during waking hours, too.

This one began with a Wild West kitchen that felt entirely out of place — the legacy of a previous owner who’d decorated it like a Yellowstone sound-stage. That was the first challenge facing designer John Cialone of Tom Stringer Design Partners when a longtime client family traded their city brownstone for a white-columned, federal-leaning house in Kenilworth, walking distance to the train and, from the curb, a dead ringer for an ambitious Cape Cod cottage. Inside, the Montana fantasy had none of the ease this young family of five was after—and Cialone already had a good sense of what that ease would look like for them. This was his third project for the couple. He’d designed their city apartment first, then a lake house north of town, so by the time this house came along, he knew how they lived. The three children are all budding gourmands, revering Chicago’s tasting-menu scene the way other kids talk baseball stats. “I feel like I know what they want before they say it,” Cialone says. It shows. The kitchen got the most drastic treatment: a near-total gut, with the old window—barely a window at all— blown wide open, so a corner that used to sit in shadow now gets afternoon light all day. That new light is part of what let the kitchen’s two shades of sage read true instead of gray, a distinction Cialone worried about

designchicagomag.com THE MART DESIGN CHICAGO 49 enough that he split the cabinets and island a shade apart, just for contrast. The mismatch continues overhead: Visual Comfort fixtures next to Urban Electric ones over the island, nickel paired with bronze—the kind of small friction that keeps a room from feeling too matched-up. The family room runs on the same instinct— restraint with a little mischief built in—but through color the family already trusted. Blue and green weren’t new for them; Cialone had used the same pairing on their lake house years earlier, and it had earned its keep since. Here it shows up in a bolder floral wallpaper, one that needed brown worked in, or it risked looking, as he put it, “overly preppy.” That same logic carries into the living room, where a card table doubles as a party buffet—proof of Cialone’s real preoccupation: rooms that actually get used, not photographed once and shut off. The wife, a former Sotheby’s specialist, brought a genuine collector’s eye to the art on the walls, and that same instinct— valuing what’s already good rather than starting over—shows up again in the furnishings, most of which lean toward reuse over replacement wherever the house reasonably allows it. “They’re just terrific clients, over and over,” Cialone says. It’s the kind of thing a designer only gets to say the third time around. n The dining room, sheathed in creamy white and trimmed in sage green, displays part of the family’s growing art collection. The sculptural brass-and-glass overhead fixture lends a modernist note to the traditional furniture silhouettes. Marine-blue Hancock & Moore leather chairs ring a game table in the living room’s window corner, where chinoiserie wallcovering and a glass-front cabinet add collected, clubby depth.

When Steve Somogyi and Filip Malyszko of Chicago’s Steve + Filip Design were asked to work on a Cotswold- inspired Hinsdale residence designed by R. Harold Zook in the 1920s, they were eager to dialogue with the fine stonework, lead-glass windows, and exposed timbers that give the home its engaging personality. The house—home to a couple and three teenage children—had been attentively restored by Michael Abraham Architecture and decorated by the previous owners in a decidedly darker, more G traditional style. “We wanted to make the decoration a bit softer and more sympathetic to the architecture,” says Malyszko. “Our clients didn’t want chintz and checks, and plaids. And they didn’t want a formal living room, they wanted a television in there, and the baby grand piano that the kids play. The homeowners loved the idea of using an Eames lounge chair in the living room, but instead of doing it in leather, we did it in a bouclé, which lightens it and brightens it.” When it came to the color palette, the designers opted for

Newly applied Venetian plaster, in tones from bone to dove gray, creates a soothing envelope throughout. “One of clients’ favorite colors is a smokey blue, which we accented throughout the spaces. And we played a lot with texture, using mohair, suede, and subtle patterns, especially on first floor, so that all the rooms play off each other and flow.”

56 DESIGN CHICAGO THE MART designchicagomag.com A not-too-studied informality, shot through with saucy notes, gives these rooms a stylish yet playful character. A blue-suede ottoman pops amid the earth tones in the living room, and the walls and ceiling of the home office in the coach house are painted in stripes inspired by a Paul Smith shirt. “We added antiqued mirrors to the four existing built-ins in the dining room, and placed pieces of old Swahili armor in each for another layer of interest and texture,” notes Malyszko. Comfort is key everywhere. A quartet of Steve + Filip-designed club chairs ground the steeply pitched Four Seasons room, where a run of casement windows offers an eye-filling view of the greenery outside. A custom-designed sofa in charcoal bouclé and a pair of mohair-covered Bernhardt Club Chairs from CAI Designs create a welcoming conversation area in the living room. The family room—an outdoor space when the house was first built—is outfitted with a custom-designed sectional upholstered in contrasting leather and shearling, and a midcentury-inspired game table paired with chairs upholstered in a bold pattern from Pindler. Robbins and her team set to work, to create a low-slung, modern home that fit the environment. Keeping the client’s wishes in mind, they presented a detailed model. She says, “The owner saw it and fell in love, and I didn’t expect that to be so easy. But I immediately went to the contractor with concerns about the budget because we had so many windows.” The team set up a second meeting to discuss the budget, and the client threw them a curveball. Robbins continues, “We’re all in our conference room with a site plan sitting in the middle of the table. And the owner says, you know, we love the house. It’s a beautiful painting, but we need a different canvas.” And he was right. So, they looked for a new canvas for the masterpiece. Fortuitously, Robbins knew of a lakefront property that was unusual for the area, with over 350 feet of frontage, allowing them to site the long, lean design so that every window has ample views of Lake Michigan. To counteract that, we created little intimate courtyards to break up the scale.” The couple lives in one wing of the house separated from the guest wing by the public rooms, with the main entry to the house adjacent to the guest wing. The clients also wanted a private entrance to their wing. Robbins shares that the wife wanted to be able to come in through the garage and go directly to her bedroom to drop off her new shoes. “It kind of speaks to life, right? She said, ‘I don’t want to have to go through all the other rooms to get to my bedroom, I just want my own intimate area.’” The private wing includes the kitchen, the porch, and the primary bedroom suite, and has direct access to the pool. It is the main area where day- to-day life happens. And when their children or other guests visit, they can still maintain their privacy. The house includes many beautifully crafted details, but the spectacular view is the centerpiece, visible from almost every area of the home. And to appreciate that view, Robbins used a signature style when creating the window layout. “We are known for the connection to nature in our designs, but I think it goes beyond that, because, nature always gives it that warmth, The formal dining room boasts a quartzite stone wall and custom cabinetry. An equally spaced 7-foot window would give the house a very different feel. Instead, we have this irregularity that mimics how trees grow when you look out the window. It softens that edge between inside and outside, and doesn’t feel like a man-made, rigid line between the two. Those elements make it feel more serene.” Robbins says that while she is creating modern architecture, she doesn’t want it to be rigid or cold. “I want the home to feel like it’s made by a human, to be an emotional response, not an intellectual one.” n The home’s main entryway is adjacent to the guest wing. In this 3,123-square-foot Bucktown spec home, interior designer Alissa Johnson solved a creative couple’s design conundrum by introducing thoughtful, curated updates in opportune spots—layering the space with rich materials, pattern, color, texture, and sculpture that reflect their artistic sensibilities. Upon entering the home, visitors are immediately greeted by an intimate yet effortlessly tailored living room. “Because the room is narrow and serves as the main artery from the front door, the instinct might be to scale everything down,” explains Johnson. “Instead, we leaned into a grand statement. The husband’s piano is a massive, beautiful piece, so rather I than trying to hide it, we designed the room to embrace it.” A velvet sofa in a calming blue hue is paired with a highly textured woven chair in a rust color that plays off the painting over the mantel. A sculptural, travertine coffee table with a live-edge base grounds the space whereas sheer drapery bridges the living and dining rooms—adding an appealing geometric thread. Feeling increasingly cramped in their condo, however, and unable to find a house that checked all the right boxes, they tapped PROjECT, a Chicago-based all-female design firm, to determine whether the house could become the home they envisioned. PROjECT founder Aimee Wertepny vividly recalls the first time she stepped out onto the home’s lush interior courtyard. “It’s this magical outdoor rotunda that the home wraps around,” she says. “We stepped outside and were immediately transported to a tucked-away café in 1920s Paris. That’s when we knew modern romance was the way forward.” Rather than simply redecorate the 13,000-square-foot residence, Wertepny and her team rethought how it functioned, deleting walls, rounding corners and adding arched openings between spaces, tempering the angular geometry while making the home feel gentler—and more forgiving—for an active family. The softened geometry also reinforced the team’s broader emphasis on durability and family-friendly living.
